Cookie Policy
This policy lists every cookie and browser-storage key NIGHT RIP sets on nightrip.co.uk, what each one is for and how long it lasts. It describes what this site actually does rather than a generic template. Essential entries keep the shop working and cannot be switched off; optional ones load only if you accept them. For how we handle personal data more broadly, see our privacy policy.
How your choice works
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept optional cookies. Accepting and rejecting are equally easy — there are no pre-ticked boxes, and nothing on the site is withheld if you reject. Essential cookies are set either way, because without them you could not sign in or hold a basket.
Your choice is stored in your browser under nightrip-consent along with the date you made it. We ask again after six months, or sooner if we add a new optional category. To change or withdraw your choice at any time, use the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page.
Withdrawing consent stops us loading that technology from then on. It cannot delete cookies a third party has already set in your browser — to clear those, use your browser's own cookie controls.
Essential cookies
These are strictly necessary to provide the service you asked for, so they do not require consent. Both are HttpOnly and Secure: scripts cannot read them, and they are only ever sent over an encrypted connection.
| Name | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|
| nr_session | Keeps you signed in after you use an emailed sign-in link. It is signed so it cannot be tampered with, and carries your email address and an expiry — nothing else. | 30 days |
| nr_admin | Signs a member of our staff in to the admin console. Never set for shoppers. | 12 hours |
Essential browser storage
Your basket and checkout use your browser's local storage rather than cookies. These entries stay in your browser and are not sent to us automatically with every request the way a cookie is. They are also strictly necessary.
| Key | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|
| nightrip-basket | What you have added to your basket, so it survives a refresh or a browser restart. | Until you clear it |
| nightrip-basket-token | An anonymous identifier tying your basket to the stock reserved for it. It is not linked to your name or email address. | Until you clear it |
| nightrip-checkout | The reference and email address of an order you are part-way through, so returning from a card or PayPal redirect resumes the right checkout. | Cleared when the order completes |
| nightrip-consent | Your cookie choice and the date you made it. | 6 months |
Payment cookies
Stripe and PayPal set their own cookies when you reach the payment step, to complete the payment and to detect fraud. Their scripts are fetched only at that point, so browsing the shop and filling a basket sets nothing from either provider.
These are necessary to take a payment you have asked us to take. The names and lifetimes are controlled by the provider, not by us — Stripe and PayPal each publish their own cookie policy with the current list.
Optional cookies
These load only after you accept them. Reject them and the rest of the shop behaves exactly the same — you can still browse, order, pay and contact us.
| Category | What it loads | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Live chat | Tawk.to, our live-chat provider, which sets its own cookies so a conversation can continue across pages. The launcher only appears during our opening hours. Tawk.to controls these cookie names and lifetimes; their cookie policy has the current list. | Available — loads only if you accept |
| Analytics | Google Analytics 4, which would set _ga and _ga_* cookies to count visits and show which pages get used. | Not currently enabled |
The analytics choice appears in the banner even though Google Analytics is switched off today. That way, if we ever turn it on, it cannot load for anyone who has not already opted in.
What we do not use
We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking, retargeting pixels or social-media trackers, and we do not sell or share your browsing behaviour with advertisers.
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It is cookieless: it sets no cookie and no identifier in your browser, does not follow you between sites and does not collect personal data. That is why it is not part of the choice above and stays on for everyone.
Changes to this policy
If we add or remove a cookie we update this page — and, when an optional cookie is involved, the consent banner — in the same release. Questions about anything here can go to hello@nightrip.co.uk or through our contact form. This policy was last updated on 2026-07-28.
